HapMap: Auditory & Tactile Walking Navigation

A team-built walking-navigation app for visually impaired users, using voice and haptic feedback instead of a screen.

Brief

Turn-by-turn navigation apps assume a screen. HapMap, built with a five-person team for a university software engineering course, is a walking-navigation app for individuals with low vision, using cues instead of a display: haptic feedback that increases in frequency as the user nears a turn, paired with voice guidance and vibration patterns.

Approach

  • Sensory Navigation: Built the sensor and feedback layer in Dart and Flutter, pairing proximity-based haptic cues with voice guidance.
  • Routing: Integrated Google Maps for turn-by-turn routing data.
  • Quality Assurance: Set up CI through GitHub Actions and enforced production-level quality using mutation testing.

Result

Mutation testing cut the bug count by 80% against the untested baseline.
