From a Community Problem to a Scalable Product
This project started as a simple idea to solve a problem in my own community. I saw how much time was wasted with paper notices and manual visitor logs. I built the first version of the Android app and Java backend in my spare time. The real test came when other local communities started adopting it. As the user base grew 14x in just a few months, I had to quickly re-architect parts of the backend to handle the load. This was my first real-world lesson in designing for scalability. Ensuring the real-time visitor notification system had zero downtime was non-negotiable, as it was a core security promise of the app. Maintaining and scaling My Society from a personal project to a platform serving over 1,500 people taught me invaluable lessons about product ownership, system design, and the responsibility that comes with building software that people rely on every day.
